Artist Chooses The Metal Centre™ For Steel Element Manufacturing

Former Edinburgh College of Art student and rising star in the world of contemporary art,  Rocca Gutteridge, recently requested The Metal Centre to assist her in manufacturing interactive steel elements following a series of commissions in East Sussex and Scotland.

Rocca designed an interactive steel arch in Tunbridge Wells and a sensory sculpture in Muirhouse.

Following completion of the design process, Rocca collaborated with the team at The Metal Centre in Leith to create two stunning sculptures with visual, touch and sound elements aimed at tapping into both adults and child’s senses.

The sculptures components were made out of mild steel then galvanised for durability and weather protection, both works are located outdoors.

Commenting on the work, Rocca stated, “It’s been a completely new challenge working in this way.  I spent time discussing and researching the pieces with occupational therapists, care workers and the clients.  My role was to create works that held their own rights as sculptures but had a specific interactive and holistic function too.  The xylophone was particularly fun to work on.”

The clients thoroughly enjoy their new sculptures which not only enhance the look of their outdoor spaces and create fantastic talking points but also add to an interactive, sensory experience for the children and adult’s learning and development.
